LUCKNOW: Calling the proposed impeachment motion to be moved against Justice Yashwant Varma on the allegations of recovery of huge quantity of cash from his residence in New Delhi, as a step to keep the trust of the people in the judiciary intact, Allahabad High Court Bar Association welcomed the move and supported it.
Anil Tiwari, the president of Allahabad High Court Bar Association said that if people's trust is the strength of judiciary power then such a move would make the people feel that their grievance was heard at the highest level.
"It's a step towards public and cause victory." he said while appealing to all political parties to vote in favour of it.
It may be mentioned here that Justice Varma was in the limelight on March 21, when media was flooded with news regarding the fire in a store room of outhouse of his official bungalow, and recovery of bags of cash currencies thereafter.
The then Chief Justice of India Justice Sanjiv Khanna took cognisance of the news and on March 22 instituted an in-house enquiry against the judge by a panel of three High Court judges to find out the truthfulness of the allegations against Justice Varma.
On March 24, the Delhi High Court issued an order removing Justice Varma from all judicial work in accordance with directives of the Supreme Court of India.
Then, the Supreme Court collegiums recommended stat had approved the transfer of Justice Varma to the Allahabad High Court. Despite strong opposition by Bar Association, Justice Varma was administered oath by the chief justice of the Allahabad High Court in his chamber on April 5, 2025.
Usually oaths to judges are made in public ceremonies organized by the National/State level judicial to which dignitaries would attend, Justice Varma, however, was administered oath privately in his chamber.
Justice Varma as an old judge of the Allahabad High Court and had taken his oath as judge of the HC here in 2014 and had been transferred to the Delhi High Court at some time 2021.
However, even after the judges acceptance of transfer to the Allahabad High Court, the then CJI had directed the chief justice of Allahabad high not to assign any judicial work to Justice Varma.
Now the in-house inquiry committee consisting of 3 judges of the high court has submitted its report to the Chief Justice of India who has in turn submitted it to the President of India.
