New
Delhi: The Supreme
Court on Friday postponed the hearing of bail pleas filed by Surendra
Gadling and Jyoti Jagtap, while they delayed their decision on the NIA’s
appeal against Mahesh Raut’s bail in the Bhima Koregaon case.
The case,
linked to alleged Maoist involvement in the 2018 Bhima Koregaon violence, has
seen that he had been arrested multiple times under the Unlawful Activities
(Prevention) Act (UAPA). Surendra Gadling, a lawyer, and Jyoti Jagtap, a
cultural activist, have been in detained for several years, while Mahesh Raut,
a tribal rights activist, was granted bail by the Bombay High Court in
September last year.
During the
proceedings, the NIA argued against granting bail, stating that the accused
were involved in activities that threatened national security. The defender ,
however, dismissed the charges as baseless, insisting that the arrests were
politically influenced and lacked solid evidence.
The Bhima
Koregaon case has been widely debated, with human rights organizations and
activists calling for fair trials and the release of those arrested. With the Supreme Court adjourning the
matter, the next hearing date remains uncertain. With the Supreme Court yet to
deliver its verdict, the case continues to be a subject of profound legal and
political scrutiny.
