"Kalyug in Court: Punjab & Haryana HC Slams Man for Challenging ₹5K Maintenance to 77-Year-Old Mother, Imposes ₹50K Fine"

Chandigarh: In a striking remark, the Punjab and Haryana High Court recently expressed strong disapproval of a man's refusal to pay ₹5,000 as monthly maintenance to his 77-year-old mother, calling it a reflection of "Kalyug"—a term symbolizing moral decline in the current age.

The case involved a man challenging an order that directed him to provide financial support to his aging mother under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. However, the court dismissed his plea, emphasizing the moral and legal responsibility of children to care for their elderly parents.

Justice Sanjay Vashisth, presiding over the matter, remarked that the son's reluctance to provide a minimal amount for his mother’s survival was deeply concerning. The court upheld the maintenance order, stating that neglecting parents in their old age is an unfortunate reality of modern times.

This judgment serves as a reminder of the legal obligations towards senior citizens, reinforcing that children must not abandon their parents in their twilight years.
