The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has recently called on the Punjab government to enhance its tree preservation framework to address significant environmental concerns. During the hearing, the NGT highlighted critical gaps in Punjab’s existing “Tree Preservation Policy for Non-Forest Government and Public Land, 2024,” especially noting the exclusion of trees located on private properties.
The tribunal expressed concern that this loophole has led to rampant illegal tree felling, further aggravating Punjab’s already critically low tree cover. The NGT has mandated the Punjab Chief Secretary to review these issues and submit a comprehensive action plan by the next hearing scheduled for October 10, 2025.
The tribunal stressed the need for robust protective, punitive, and remedial measures to safeguard the state’s green cover and preserve environmental balance. This move signals a strong judicial push towards sustainable development and environmental conservation in the region.
Stakeholders and environmentalists have welcomed the NGT’s intervention, hoping it will catalyze stricter enforcement and broader reforms in Punjab’s environmental policies.
