In a major relief to Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna, the
Supreme Court on Tuesday closed the contempt case against them in
the Patanjali misleading ads matter. The top court also closed all the
proceedings against them after they submitted an undertaking saying
that they will not use any misleading ads going forward.
The top court was hearing the case after a plea was filed by Indian
Medical Association against Ramdev and Patanjali's remarks against
modern medicine. The 2022 plea showed that Patanjali ads were
making false promises of miracle cures.
The IMA has said that the misleading ads violated the law under the
Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1954 and Drugs and Magic Remedies
(Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954.
Several hearings took place in the Supreme Court in the case. During
this, Patanjali Ayurved owners along with the Uttarakhand state
government and even the Centre were rebuked by the apex court
Bench for not taking action against the misleading advertisements.
Back in July, Ramdev and Patanjali Ayurved had told the top court that
the firm has now halted the sale of as many as 14 products whose
licenses were suspended by the State Licensing Authority of
Uttarakhand in April this year.
