SC Ensures Long-Term Financial Support for Divorced Women
In a significant and sensitive decision, the Supreme Court of India has underlined the importance of long-term financial protection for divorced women. In a recent case, the apex court directed a man to not only pay a monthly alimony of ₹50,000 to his ex-wife but also to hand over their shared house and clear the remaining home loan.
What makes this judgment particularly noteworthy is the progressive clause: the monthly maintenance will automatically increase by 5% every two years. This adjustment accounts for inflation and the rising cost of living — a concern often overlooked in fixed alimony cases.
The Court observed that ending a marriage does not absolve a person of their responsibilities, especially when it leaves one partner financially vulnerable. The bench emphasized that dignity, stability, and fairness must guide post-divorce arrangements, especially when the woman may not have independent income or support.
This judgment sets a strong precedent for ensuring economic justice in matrimonial disputes, reminding society that a fair settlement must include both emotional closure and financial security.
