In 2022, the Madras High Court achieved its highest Case Clearance Rate (CCR) in the last five years, disposing of 114% of the cases before it.
According to data from the High Court website, 161,810 cases were filed at the principal seat in Chennai and the Madurai Bench between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022.
During this timeframe, both benches collectively resolved 185,203 cases, indicating the effective clearing of a backlog of older cases and the disposal of a substantial percentage of new matters.
Civil cases, particularly writ petitions, constituted the majority of new cases at both benches. In Chennai, 54,715 civil cases, including 35,368 writ petitions, were instituted, with 71,144 cases being disposed of. In Madurai, 38,327 new civil cases, of which 29,317 were writ petitions, were instituted, and 45,548 civil cases were disposed of during the same period.
Regarding criminal cases, 41,084 were instituted at the principal bench, with 40,943 being disposed of. In Madurai, 66,011 new criminal cases were instituted, and 73,116 criminal cases were disposed of between January 1 and December 31, 2022.
The Madras High Court had previously recorded CCRs of 106.21% in 2018, 112.77% in 2019, 103.23% in 2020, and 109% in 2021.
Additionally, the district judiciary reported a CCR of 94% for the year 2022, with a total of 8,63,518 cases instituted and 8,06,905 cases disposed of in district courts across Tamil Nadu between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022.
