Indian Courts may award different types of custody based on what is best for the child:
a. Physical custody – The child lives primarily with one parent, while the other parent may be granted visitation rights.
b. Joint custody – The child alternates between living with both parents (weekly, monthly, or on weekends). Decision-making is often shared.
c. Legal custody – One or both parents are given authority to make important decisions related to the child’s education, healthcare, religion, etc.
d. Third-party custody – If both parents are unfit or unable, custody can be given to a relative or guardian (e.g., grandparents).
