Can the child’s preference influence the court’s custody decision? Is the child’s preference considered in custody cases by the court?

Yes, especially if the child is old enough (usually 9–12 years or more) and mature enough to express a clear preference, the court may consider their opinion. In such cases, the judge may interview the child privately (in-chamber) to avoid pressure or influence from either parent. However, the child’s preference is not binding — it is just one of several factors considered.
