The law that deals specifically with domestic violence in India is the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 (commonly called the DV Act or PWDVA). This is a civil law, which means it focuses on providing relief and protection to women, rather than punishing the abuser criminally (though non-compliance with court orders can lead to criminal action).
The aim of this Act is to give immediate protection, a safe residence, financial help, and the right to live in a violence-free environment. It empowers Magistrates to pass protection and residence orders quickly and appoints Protection Officers to assist women in filing complaints.
