An AOR, or Advocate on Record, is a special type of lawyer who is allowed to file cases directly in the Supreme Court of India. Not every lawyer can become an AOR. To get this position, an advocate must practice for a few years, train under a senior AOR, and then pass a special exam conducted by the Supreme Court.

An AOR has many important responsibilities. They prepare and file all court papers, make sure documents are correct, pay court fees, and handle communication with the Supreme Court registry. Other lawyers can argue a case in the Supreme Court, but only an AOR can officially file the case.

In simple words, an AOR is like an “official representative” in the Supreme Court. They ensure that every case they file follows all rules. It is a respected and responsible role for experienced lawyers.
