What is the Online Gaming Bill 2025?

The Online Gaming Bill 2025, officially called the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, is a national law passed by the Indian Parliament to control online gaming. The law aims to protect people — especially children and youth — from gambling, addiction, fraud, and financial loss. During the Monsoon Session of Parliament in August 2025, the Indian government presented the Online Gaming Bill 2025 to make clear rules for online gaming. First, the Lok Sabha (the first house of Parliament) debated the Bill and approved it. The very next day, it went to the Rajya Sabha (the second house), where it was passed by a voice vote, even though the Opposition protested and asked questions.

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw introduced the Bill and explained that the government is not against gaming, but against online gambling and cheating apps.   • Advertising banned games can lead to up to 2 years jail and ₹50 lakh fine.

  • Handling payments for illegal games can lead to up to 3 years jail and ₹1 crore fine.

  • Repeat offences can lead to 3–5 years jail and up to ₹2 crore fine.

Most offences are cognizable and non-bailable, which means police can arrest offenders without a warrant, and bail is not automatic.

This law is made to stop gambling, protect children and youth, and make online gaming safe and fair in India. 

Powers of Authorities Under Online Gaming Bill 2025

The Online Gaming Bill 2025 gives strong powers to officials to stop illegal online games in India. They can search offices and premises of gaming companies, seize digital data, devices, and servers, block banned gaming websites, and freeze bank accounts linked to illegal games.

In serious cases, officials can arrest offenders without a warrant. Companies and their directors can also be punished unless they prove they followed all rules properly.

Online Gaming Authority Under Online Gaming Bill 2025

Many startups may lose revenue or even shut down, and foreign investors may hesitate to invest in India’s gaming sector.

Many gaming companies and startups might close, and India could lose its position as a leading gaming market.

These industry groups point out that the sector had already received over ₹25,000 crore in foreign direct investment (FDI) and created more than 2 lakh jobs.
